Articles of Interest | Weekly Wrap-Up

An enormous thank you to the RR team for holding the fort while I had a ruptured Appendix removed during Cup week. All back on deck albeit a little slower as I ramp back up so thanks for your patience everyone.

Last week Claudia celebrated a birthday and Sam wrote a very timely blog dealing with silly season party etiquette.

I also got to attend the MacKillop Family Services annual public meeting which continues to get better year-on-year. A true celebration of all the hard work and accomplishments that employees, volunteers and clients achieve, often in the face of real adversity. It was an extraordinarily moving evening where all associated with this fabulous agency were recognized. Onwards and upwards MFS!

I came across a couple of interesting articles during the week that I would like to share with you. The first prompted an immediate “I knew it” reaction so I am pleased and relieved to say that this is a ‘thing’!

The second article of interest had everything to do with getting an early warning from Millennials, if you are a Baby Boomer that is.

A roller coaster week for Foodbank having its funding virtually cut in half in the first part of the week to have that same decision reversed in the second half of the week…Phew. The protest campaign had barely got off the ground before good sense prevailed that will allow Foodbank to continue their amazing working into the future.

For third year in a row and heralding our 20+ years of partnering with forward thinking and progressive NFP’s, we are back at the Ethical Jobs NFP People Conference in Melbourne which kicked off this morning for two days of inspiration.

A Word From The Temp Desk:

Last week on the temp desk we focused a lot on phone etiquette. After a big week filled with hundreds of phone calls with candidates, our biggest issue was candidate phone etiquette. When filling a temp position, a common thing that temp consultants are looking for is strong communication skills and recently that is something that we have been struggling to find.

‘The way you answer the phone’ – Answering the phone daily is something that humans have been conditioned to do more and more over the years whether it be replying to an SMS or answering a phone call. Has anyone ever told you, given you feedback or instructed you on how to answer the phone? Answering the phone with a simple and quizzical ‘Hello’, ‘Hey’ or ‘Hi’ just doesn’t cut it anymore.

As a recruiter, conducting a pre-interview phone screen with potential candidates is the first verbal encounter we have with that person. This is our first impression of you. As a candidate you need to be able to introduce yourself and conduct yourself professionally when answering the phone. How do you expect a recruiter to take you seriously for the job that you have applied for if you can’t communicate professionally?

If you have applied for a job whether it be a temp or perm opportunity you need to be prepared to receive a phone-call and YES it may be from a private number!

Below I have included the link to a blog we wrote a few months back ’The Art of Professional Communication”. I strongly urge you to read it:

To all our working temp professionals, keep up the great work! For those temp professionals who are finishing or have recently finished assignments, congratulations on finishing and thank you for representing Rusher Rogers to the best of your ability. To our active temp professionals still on the hunt for the next temp or perm opportunity, keep persisting – you’ll get there!
